5 Indie Games You Should Look Out For
I have a confession. I am addicted Twitter, and over the past few years I've tried to reduce my time on the platform through various means. However; one day I wanted to try something different, so I took the tools Twitter gave me to try to curate my feed into something I was happy to scroll through, rather than leaving me angry or frustrated. The result of which was the discovery of several in development indie games that have been leveraging these social platforms for some time to try to find their audience. Today I want to share some of these games with you because I really believe there's something special to be experienced with them, and most importantly, I really want to see them fin...

Sea of Stars is Building Towards Something Bigger
Просмотров 3 тыс.4 месяца назад
For years to come, I'll remember my introduction to Sea of Stars as the start of my favorite gaming memory of 2023. Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception, there was something that threw me off about it - something I think others felt as well. But rather than letting confusion or dissenting opinion color my own perception of the game, I decided to push a bit deeper. Through playing The M...
Is This Pikmin's Turning Point?
Просмотров 19 тыс.7 месяцев назад
To say I was highly anticipating the release of Pikmin 4 would honestly be a bit of an understatement. As a fan of the series since the first entry, Pikmin 4 instantly became my most anticipated game of 2023 the moment it was revealed. Not only that, I previously decided to replay each of the prior games for my previous retrospective before its launch in order to generate as much interest as I ...
F-Zero 99 is the Nintendo I Missed

F-Zero 99 surprised me. While it's initial reveal unearthed some skepticism, after diving into the game for myself, I found I was having the most fun I've had with a multiplayer Nintendo game in years, and a lot of that has to do with what I can only assume was the development philosophy; breath new life into a forgotten IP at the source with a bold, focused, and interesting idea. It's importan...

After almost a entire decade since the release of Pikmin 3, the latest entry in the series is finally upon us. I first played the original Pikmin all the way back in 2001 during its release, and I've been a fan of the series ever since. When I first heard that Pikmin 4 was finally unveiled, I decided that I wanted to not only replay each of the following games, but also research the development...

In 2020, I yelled from the rooftops why Wario NEEDS more games. As it turns out, in 2023, the next best thing (probably better tbh) has arrived. I've been pretty much locked into Pizza Tower since its launch, breezing through my first playthrough while obsessively trying to perfect its levels and reach 100% completion. I wasn't fully sold on this game, however, which is why I decided to make th...

I'm super excited for Pikmin 4. While the initial reveal didn't leave much information to go off of, there are a ton of details hidden within the latest trailer indicating that this game is going to be quite different from its predecessor. My biggest takeaway is that Pikmin 4 is shaping up to be quite similar to Pikmin 2 while expanding on its core concepts, and in this video I attempt to exami...

I've got a confession to make. I don't really like the Nintendo Switch, and I've been deep in thought trying to figure out why that is. I miss party quests! they were so fun xD I remember a good ludi maze pq would get done in like less than a minute. Guild PQ was also great, I remember my guild used to do it all the time trying to make it to the top of the leader boards...we got really close too but I think people started quitting around then unfortanately. I still talk to a few of my old maplestory friends, I still miss some of my other ones though that I lost contact with over the many years. I was also lucky enough to get free bigfoot leech straight to 200 xD

32:50 I don't agree at all here. I don't think it was unbalanced at all, I think it was amazing! Every class had its place. Mages did most of the damage at low levels, before other classes started catching up and finally surpassing Mages at around lvl 60-70. Warriors had a lot of health and they didn't die from a single hit, Mages had low health but huge mana and they had Mage Guard (or whatever was its name) to neglect 80% of damage from HP to MP. Ranges and Thiefs could do damage from distance. My first account was a Cleric/Priest/Bishop which basicly did no damage before getting to 4th job as a Bishop and actually getting some skillpoints in Genesis. But I was always the most wanted account in a party because of my skills. As a Cleric, I, of course had Heal which was very important in a party as no one needed any health potions. And I could actually train solo, thanks to Heal actually doing damage to undead monsters. But I was even more wanted in a party after 3rd job, when Priest got Holy Symbol which was probably the most important skill in the game giving 150% xp boost to all party members. I would 100% start playing Old School Maplestory. I don't even think any xp rates should be changed at all. It would be grindy and time consuming to level up, but so what. I wouldn't need to get level 30 in a week or two. The early game was probably the best time on a new character. But good video otherwise and nice trip back to the golden age.

52:00 that can be a personal preference to wanna play games on pc over the switch for the sake of performance, but if you’re calling that a general flaw with the switch, that’d be incredibly silly, wacky, and goofy if you ask me. what did you expect from a portable nintendo console?!

Definitely not the only one who feels this way. I'm playing an older version of the game right now that's doing its best to emulate the game from back in the day. You nailed it on the head that modern MMOs have forgotten what makes these games so good. I wish I could do something about that and make an MMO that captures it all, but it's tough and there's no time to work on that for adults that need to make money to live. Maybe someday we'll get an MMO our kind can love again. For now, MapleStory private servers do the trick.

Sadly Old School Maplestory cannot return. Time is far removed and people have changed, it'll never be the same. I was a decently high level when potential dropped and from others even higher level than I had complaints because it meant their scrolled gear was worthless. The simplicty of scrolling gear was for the best, potential just made it a massive money sink. I dropped out before Big Bang. As you said about imbalances with HP, I was an archer and what was I grinding towards? I finally got the minimum HP to not get one shot by Skeles, but this was my final training spot and anything like Horntail wasn't a possibility because I'd need to be a very high level to live in Horntail with hyperbody. The game has a ton of charm, the simplicity helps the game, and all the people I met and talked to were great and what compelled me to continue playing. It's possibly the only MMO I'd ever get into. Grinding with people in Ant Tunnel, exploring Ludi with others, awaiting new areas in patches, it was a really great time. Helping others make their way out of Sleepywood, or getting them out of Omega Sector, there were just little things you can do for others, which made Maple special. There isn't a rush to max level, nor one to do a PQ. It's a grinding game, that at times takes ten hours to gain a level, but it was laid back.

Wii U was attempting a number of things for one they wanted to make a Nintendo console that appealed to the Xbox 360 PS3 hardcore gamer audience and I wish Nintendo wouldn’t have given up on that, the Wii U was powerful for its time more powerful than its competitors in 2012 and had good third party AAA support with the latest games. Another thing it was attempting was making a 3DS type experience for your TV which made sense

After the Wii U turned them into a laughingstock, Nintendo needed to win the masses back, and so it makes sense that they presented the Switch as a cool, streamlined tech product without all those fun, goofy flourishes Nintendo loves. I love the Switch because I just think it has a much better library than the Wii U (even disregarding that most of the Wii U's best games have been ported), and while I agree that it lacks a lot of the character of the prior systems, I think that's what Nintendo needed to turn the perception of them around. Now that they're back on top of the world, and they've given multiple interviews saying that they're not taking their success for granted, I'm fully expecting that the Switch's successor will bring a lot of that personality back, just in a more functional, considered way.

I remember being a low level bowman accidentally finding myself deep somewhere where there where Zombie mushrooms and not being able to get out. After a long while, a higher level player (maybe a thief? I dont remember) decided to make it his mission to help me get out. After he helped me out, I decided I wanted to follow him everywhere and I had some of the greatest adventures and memories with this guy for a long time afterwards. Whenever I think of my early memories in Maple, I think of him. I wish there was some way I could thank him for those awesome adventures and memories. Hey thanks for checking out some of my videos and commenting, it means a lot! Funny you mention it, I actually have another super long retrospective in the works about the entire Paper Mario series that goes into more detail about how I feel about both Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario, but to TLDR it - I felt as though the original Paper Mario works better as a 'Mario RPG'. While it de-emphasized platforming and those cool and funny action sequences, I feel like it captures the essence of Mario better in its RPG elements. There's an element of easy to learn, difficult to master with a lot of room for experimentation that I really appreciate about it. Thought I'd bring it up since your comment stood out to me as its really been on my mind! Thanks again!

I think it's important to acknowledge the context behind the lack of PS5 exclusives. The fact that Covid absolutely wrecked the global supply chain. Making it nearly impossible for most cobsumers to get one for the first 2 years. The Switch luckily launched well beforehand, so it already had a massive install base to sell games to. To be clear, my point isn't to detract from what Nintendo has accomplished, just to provide some context. Had Sony abandoned the PS4 as early as we would typically expect it would have been a bad move. They have abysmal sales numbers on some wildly expensive games, a financial nightmare. And, more importantly, it would've been bad for their image in the eyes of their users. Can you imagine if the biggest titles coming from Sony over the course of 3 years was impossible to access for no other reason than hardware shortages? Something consumers were already pissed about and (unfairly imo) blaming Sony for, along with scalping. Like it or not, prioritizing a massively extended crossgen period was the best move for Sony AND the vast majority of PS users. I do think Sony and Xbox both have a ton of stuff they need to work on, and they could absolutely take a few notes from Nintendo. But holding the first half of the generation against them over a lack of exclusives isnt one of them. Besides, not only did Nintendo completely avoid the Covid nightmare for years after launch, but the first several years of the Switch's biggest exclusives were also just ports from the Wii U. Something that wasn't held against them only because the Wii U was an extraordinary flop (It deserved better, though. It's a great system). Their putput was super high because they had 5 years of major releases that nobody played they could rush out the door. That is a hige deal and should be acknowledged when you're making a comparison like this. You have 2 console that released during a global pandemic that nobody could buy, forcing their manufacturers to majorly extend their crossgen period, facing off against a console that released years before that same pandemic and also had a full library of mostly unknown major releases to supplement it with for years? Seems to be just as much about circumstance as it does about business decisions. One big thing I DO think Sony and MS should take away from Nintendo's playbook is supplementing their major AAA releases with smaller AA projects using their IPs on a more frequent basis. It has proven to be massively beneficial for Nintendo and their players. Another thing suspect will continue to be the norm for Nintendo, and something that will continue to help drive unit sales is console releases midway through Xbox and Playstation generations. It has helped them blur the lines between what generation the Switch even falls into, the 8th or 9th, do take away some credibility over performance complaints. But it means Nintendo isnt competing with them during peak hype for their competitors. They get their own "new console hype" cycle with zero competition.

I agree that the Switch's UI leaves a lot to be desired, and the Eshop lost all of its personality. The loss of Miiverse also sucks, but something I heavily disagree with in this video is you act like 3rd party games are no big deal. We have gotten some of the best games of all time in portable form on the Switch, like Skyrim, Diablo 3, No Man's Sky, Borderlands 1-3, Persona 5, Nier Automata, Warframe, Minecraft, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Dark Souls Remastered, Both Ori games, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 3, etc....On top of that, more 3rd party collaborations like you praised with Hyrule Warriors have happened, even with indie developers. The lifeblood of a great platform is its 3rd party support. Nintendo can't keep a platform up by itself, and that's been proven with the Gamecube, and Wii U both. While those two systems have some great games, most of those great games are 1st party, that's not a good thing. Also, most of Wii U's games have been ported to Switch, and nearly all of those ports have more content. So to me, someone who still owns his Wii U, the system is almost irrelevant at this point outside of Xenoblade Chronicles X, the only reason I still own mine. Also, I own a Steam Deck, and am even currently typing this on mine while it's in its $80 dock I bought from Steam (Ridiculous price BTW), and I still buy 3rd party games on Switch, wanna know why? Physical copies. I will never pay full price for a digital Steam game outside of an indie I want to support. With Switch, I'll buy a well made port if it's available physically in a heart beat. I have owned, and still own more games on Switch than any platform I have ever bought games for. There's so many games to play that I seriously can't keep up with them. The system is JRPG heaven for example, and while I love the genre, I can't put 50+ hours into all these games, but I love owning them, and will eventually get to most of them.

I still remember opening and booting up my WiiU on Christmas 2012. From there I created my Mii and enjoyed one of the best launch titles of all time: Nintendo Land. They really need something like this for the switch, I still have that same WiiU from over 11 years ago. Sure its battery sucks, but if you get a battery replacement (which there are tons on ebay) It can easily last for over 3 hours.

I do not miss old Nintendo. The Switch is easily my favorite system and it's not even close. The amount of high quality games I have on my system is more than what I owned between the SNES, Gameboy, Gamecube, Gameboy Advanced, DS, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U combined. Old Nintendo wishes it had this many amazing titles on on system alone. Even the SNES gets a run for it's money when it comes to the sheer quality and quantity on the Switch. Old Nintendo is long gone and thank goodness for that. I'm quite content with modern Nintendo.

Nintendo now are doing great in areas that they were weak back then, but they’ve also taken a bunch of steps back. Unless the next Nintendo system fixes EVERYTHING wrong with Nintendo (hardware power, online service, online connection, third party support) then I’m probably fully done with Nintendo consoles. I’ll just pirate the games and I don’t care if people cry “wahhh emulation bad stahp it”. Don’t blame me because Nintendo decided to make terrible consoles but great games.

Back when I first got my Wii U, it was crazy, I got the 32gb black version with New Super Mario Bros U + Luigi U and the music was a bop, it left more of a lasting impact because of its personality. The switch is fun and all but it really lacks the special charm that Nintendo put into their older consoles. I believe that the reason why the switch is so lifeless is because of the Wii U being a flop and Nintendo thinking that they can’t do anything similar because it might end up being a flop too which is really sad because that stuff made the Wii U special.

I feel exactly the same. Playing wiiu was a whole magic experience, fun, complete, from the moment you turned on the console until you turned it off. The truth is that the Nintendo experience has been downgraded with the Switch. Nintendo's magic was at its peak with the wii/wiiu, ds/3ds. I grew up with NES and SNES and at some extent they're my favorite consoles so this has nothing to do with nostalgia. Thank you Iwata-san!
